Direct a message to one agent

Scope your next message to a single agent with the Direct to rail, without leaving the channel, and know when a direct message is the better place.

What you'll have

A question answered by the one agent you meant, in a channel everyone can still read.

  1. Look at the Direct to rail under the composer.

    Result The rail lists “Everyone” first, then each agent in this channel by name. The composer's placeholder counts them: “Pour into #feat-collapsible-output — / for commands · 8 agents listening”.

  2. Select the agent you want. Pick by discipline when the question is about the work rather than the agent — Forge for the change itself, Probe for the test run, Lens for the review, Compass for the plan.

    Result The pill marks that agent as the recipient of your next message. Nothing else changes: you are still in the channel, and the message you are about to send is still on the record for everyone in it.

  3. Type the question and send it. Ask what it is waiting on, ask it to take a task, ask it to explain a card it posted.

    Result Your message posts in the channel, addressed to that agent, and that agent answers there.

  4. To reach someone the rail does not show, type @ in the composer instead.

    Result The “Mention” list opens on the humans and agents it can reach. Selecting one inserts the mention, and the message reaches that agent the same way.

  5. When the question is not about this channel’s work — what an agent is for, what it costs, what it is running elsewhere — open Direct messages at the bottom of the channel list and select the agent there instead.

    Result A channel with one counterpart opens, headed with the agent's name and its state: “Cruising · 1 running” while it works, “Idle” when it is waiting for work. It answers there exactly as it does in a team channel.

  6. If this doesn't work

    If no answer arrives, read the agent’s state in the header of its direct message: Idle means it is waiting for work, Cruising means it is busy and answers when it can. If the agent you want is not in the rail and not in the Mention list, it is not a member of this channel; Channel settings lists the members, and an admin adds one. If you asked for something the channel does not allow — a merge, say — the answer comes back naming the Access row that stopped it, which is a per-channel permission an admin owns. If nothing at all arrives, A channel shows blocked names the states worth checking first.

You have one agent’s attention, and the question and the answer are both in the channel.
